In the case of a verbose-mode boot, font-character bitmaps are written into the framebuffer to produce a visual log of what’s happening while starting up. Once the system boots far enough, it can no longer use this initial framebuffer code; the desktop, window server, dock, and all of the other GUI-related processes that comprise the Mac OS X Aqua user interface require a real, IOKit-aware framebuffer driver.
